Small Town America: Main Street Square
Photography of a small town square in Texas
I grew up in a small town in rural central Texas, and the town square was the center of the town, economically, politically, geographically and socially. Sadly, places like this are disappearing at an accelerated pace, displaced physically by the expansion of "themed" suburbs that often create an idealized and nostalgic, but false representation of life as it was, and by revisionist memories of how great life was in "simpler" times. Contemporary culture is different now, but, there is hope for places like this if we can preserve their authenticity while adapting them to contemporary life and economic realities without destroying their souls.
