Parque Amazonia: A Sustainable & Educational Amazon Forest Destination

Over the past 15 years or so, my colleagues and I have been engaged to create a sustainable tourist destination in a state controlled area of the Amazon rainforest. While there are many areas that are vastly different within this small bit of the Amazon, it can roughly be divided into disturbed and undisturbed. The state sponsored development would (or hopefully will) be in the disturbed areas. The goal of this project is to provide an accessible tourist area that has both educational and entertainment value and provides employment for the local population. We completed our conceptual design and study in early 2018 and our hope is that the state will use it to advance and implement the project.

As we researched the site over the past decade, our land entrances would look like this. This forest road was originally used by the rubber plantation workers, and is now a favorite of trespasser & poachers. We always had escorts from IBAMA or from the military police when we were in the forest on research trips. The following photographs are from 2016 & 2017.
